Always shocking to me when tell me that they were discouraged or advised not to apply to medical school; students who are clearly talented and will thrive in medical school. Even one conversation like this is so damaging and isolating to an already vulnerable group.

One of the mistakes of my early training was conflating race and genetics. This is still done at every level of medicine and science. Race is a SOCIAL construct. It is not based on biology. Race is not a risk factor; racism is.
