Due to staff shortages, the Waiea Transfer Station closed at 8:00 a.m. today (Thursday, July 18, 2010) and will reopen as regularly scheduled on Saturday, July 20, 2019, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Pls take residential waste to the Keauhou Transfer Station, open 7 days a week.

Due to staff shortages, the Kealakehe Transfer Station Greenwaste Site closed at 8:00 a.m. today (Thursday, July 18, 2019), and will reopen as regularly scheduled on Friday, July 19, 2019, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Pls take your greenwaste to the Puʻuanahulu landfill.

This is your Hawai'i County Civil Defense with a status update on July 17th at 2:45 p.m. The Hawai‘i Police Department reports that the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, also known as the Saddle Road, is now open to all through traffic. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Kaupakuea Homestead Road in Pepe‘ekeo will be reduced to one lane of traffic on Monday, July 22, 2019, and Tuesday, July 23, 2019, due to a soils investigation for the Makea Stream Bridge. Work will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., weather permitting.

A herd of goats made short work of the grass next to the Hilo Soccer Fields today, as part of a pilot project aimed at reducing the use of herbicides. Parks & Rec hired the goats and their shepherd from 3C Goat Grazing, to ride herd on the hungry weed whackers.

Highways Division will perform general maintenance on Waipi‘o Valley Road every third Wednesday from July 17 of the month for the foreseeable future. Road work, including tree trimming, weed whacking, and repairing potholes, will be performed between 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
