The Kealakehe (Kona) Transfer Station Green Waste Site only was closed at 8:00 a.m. today (Thursday, May 23, 2019). The green waste site should reopen as regularly scheduled May 24 from 7:30am-5:00pm The public can take green waste to the Puʻuanahulu landfill in Waikoloa.

I started the day peddling newspapers -- as a benefit for Parents and Children Together. Lots of friendly folks at Starbucks drive-through, donating $1 per copy of the special edition of the Tribune-Herald. Mahalo plenty to everyone who pitched in.

U.S. Post Office mail carriers on the Big Island are again joining forces with the Hawaii Island Food Basket to collect canned goods and other non-perishable food to help our less-fortunate neighbors. I signed a Proclamation to honor their efforts.

Today was a very auspicious occasion, when we welcomed the reign of the new Japanese Emperor with a signing of the official greeting book. Honorary Consul Art Taniguchi brought more than a dozen representatives of the local Japanese organizations to sign the book.

The County of Hawai‘i will accept sealed bids of used equipment and vehicles “AS IS” and “WHERE IS,” and the County issues NO WARRANTY to the highest bidder. Bidding will close on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers in Hilo.

The Department of Parks and Recreation, Aquatics Section, announces the start of a new adaptive aquatics learn-to-swim program at the Pahoa Pool. This program is for children with intellectual disabilities who may have a hard time learning in a traditional swim lesson setting.

Officer Devin Ah Chong of Kona Patrol was named Officer of the Month of May for West Hawai'i this week, but he was deployed on National Guard duty for a year so his wife Shania accepted the award on his behalf.
