Long-time County engineer David Yamamoto has been confirmed by Hawaii County Council as the new Director of Public Works. His appointment is effective February 1, 2019.

Due to staff shortages, the Keʻei Recycling and Transfer Station will be closed the remainder of today (Friday, 1/4/19), and the greenwaste drop-off chute at the Kailua-Kona (Kealakehe) Recycling and Transfer Station will be closed until further notice.

What a great start to the New Year. The players of the Pana'ewa Ali'i Football Association team, age 7 through 9, came to see me with their dedicated coach Abraham Alverez, parents and siblings. It takes me back to my Pop Warner coaching days.

Parks and Recreation announces its 2019 closure schedule for Isaac Kepo‘okalani Hale Beach Park, Kahalu‘u Beach Park and Spencer Park at ‘Ōhai‘ula Beach. Monthly closures are necessary to maintain and repair high-use parks. ,

Very honorable mention should be made to Hawaii County Dept of Public Works employees for their hundreds of cans of donated food for the Food Basket, in the form of a Christmas tree at the Magic of the Seasons holiday event. Mahalo plenty for your generous and creative idea!

County of Hawaii employees and the public joined hands to donate an impressive amount of non-perishable food during the week-long Magic of the Seasons holiday event. Hawaii Food Basket Executive Director Kristin Frost received the donated goods to help our Island 'ohana.

YWCA Preschoolers came to the County Building today, to see the Christmas trees put up by all of the County Departments and in the Mayor's Office lobby. Lots of happy excited kids waiting for Santa to arrive.

The whole kindergarten of Waiakea Elementary got on buses to see me and Santa at the County Building today. About 140 little ones took turns gathering around the Mayor's Office Christmas tree to wish us a Merry Christmas.

Tutu & Me Pahoa preschoolers came to see the Christmas trees on display at the County Building today. The little ones sang Jingle Bells for us at the Mayor's Office, which made everybody happy.
