The largest public defense nonprofit in Oregon, Metropolitan Public Defender, has temporarily stopped taking misdemeanor cases. In the last 18 months, 25 attorneys have left because of excessive caseloads, not enough training, low pay and high stress.

New Hampshire just became the latest state to end the death penalty. It's time the rest of the country follows suit.

Victory! Legislators just passed a law that prohibits the use of dogs to intimidate, control, or punish incarcerated Oregonians. Using dogs in this way can be deeply traumatic for all involved. Read our testimony on here:

People’s liberty should not depend on whether or not they can afford a lawyer. It is the duty of the State of Oregon to ensure that all people, including poor people, have a competent and zealous advocate when the state brings a case against them.

Many in Oregon's legal community say agree the public defense system has been broken for years. Despite record revenues and a relatively low-price tag needed for a fix, state lawmakers are struggling to agree on a path forward.

Attention: There's a rally tomorrow at noon in front of the White House to oppose the proposed rule announced Friday removing trans health protections! Typically these rallies mainly draw trans people and a handful of allies but DC-based cis allies, this is important to us.

Oregon just changed the way it tries and sentences youth to focus on prevention and rehabilitation. SB 1008 ends many of the problems caused by Measure 11, which required harsh penalties causing youth as young as 15 to be charged and sentenced as adults.
