Yecch. Top sales people often do this, too. That's a sign we've picked the wrong person for . But once someone becomes a manager, there must be no upside for competing against ones own team.

Me too. I urge leaders to be more selfless & actually insist their employees take their vacations. And no one should fear repercussions from having time away from work. And humans perform better after vacations anyway!

The construct of having managers compete with their own employees (for any metric) kills & profoundly undermines the management role.

New year, same problem. US workers will only use half (54%) of their earned vacation time in 2019 says CNBC. Just 23% will take all their time off. 9% will take none at all. Reasons: guilt about being out of the office & concerns about their reputation with their boss.

Touché. Musk offers very practical tips here that might help managers become more efficient & productive. I like them. But as much as I admire (& am astonished by) Musk's super-human intellect, he rarely displays any of the qualities you list here in his .

280 characters & all, I'll take the blame for the confusion. , of course, can occur anywhere & will. The data the BI sees shows companies are choosing just 20 US cities in which to grow. That will suck a lot of talented people (& their future innovations) to them.

During the recession, many managers were forced into dual Mgr/individual contributor roles. For some, this didn't change. It's hard to be a manager, and to coach people, when you have your own individual goals to meet first.

Gave a listen to Dr. Jim Harter on podcast. Great episode - though it makes me think I work for the wrong company. 😬 I struggle balancing contributor role vs manager (coach) role.

That's it. Personally, I'd tighten up guidance around meetings so the right people are there, when they're needed -- and no meeting is held unless the leader believes its essential.

Not all jobs are jobs, but when we look at Seattle, LA, San Jose, SF, San Diego et al, their economies greatly exceed the norm. So not being part of this will harm some parts of the country. Ironically, all these cities have great homelessness too.

It's less the number of hours you spend in your business & more on what you do and accomplish in those hours.
