some insight for prospective/current PHD students [thread]: I have a lot undergrad debt, no choice. got into a funded PhD I was relieved. But what isn’t explained to a 1st gen scholar of color is to get CV lines, go to conferences, give talks, etc, requires ALOT of extra money.

the job market is in shambles, & most people now know that early on in process What is deeply mystified is that a full funding package will not give you the necessary capital to do all the labor (conferencing, time to research, etc) required to stand a chance on the job market.

Even if you do secure extra funding, depending on where you live & factors like childcare, healthcare, helping parents financially as I do, odds are you will still be below what you need to just live, let alone fork over extra money for all the things required for CV lines.

As disappointing as it sounds, you have to pay to play. To play, that is, at doing all the extra leaps & hurdles now required to even stand a chance to get a full time job. I didn’t understand this fully when I started. I don’t think many marginalized students do.

I’m saying all this as someone who has been on the ground this past year with prospective first gen students interested in doctoral study. So so many think a funded package is enough. That you just do the research & the writing & that’s all it takes.

again, you have to pay to play. If you are someone who doesn’t have parents/partner/other financial support, this means: you have to be willing to go into debt or even have credit to go into further debt, to do extra hustling, to be always searching for more funding.

& this commitment to forking over a lot of extra money to participate will happen from before you start your program, through it, when you search for jobs, & even when you end. You have to understand that very clearly: this will be in every part of the process.

Doctoral study changed my life. I love the work I did, people I met. But I hope we can work to demystify this aspect of doctoral work which is not discussed openly AT ALL. I hope these words can help others make informed decisions and form strategies for better care/survival.

I'm first gen and just completed my MA. While I was fortunate to complete my BA debt free, I had to take out loans for my MA (because I decided not to work off campus, and prioritize my schooling and health), and because my parents do not financially support me.

I hope it can be a roadmap: a way to strategize, to plan accordingly, to find other avenues & resources for help. Cause you should pursue the PHD if you feel it is what is right for you. Just know there’s so much more work to be done to make it viable. :)

Also, that undergrad debt might still accrue interest while you're in graduate school. My undergrad loans doubled before I graduated with the PhD. I've been paying for 7 years and just touched the principle.

Oh, yeah, that interest is scary to look at. And it just keeps growing, which feels so unfair, and so much harder to make it. Solidarity your way with all this cruel debt and loans.
