You may, or may not have seen China Watchers / Redditors / Lunatics / Whatever claim that it's hypocritical for Chinese politicians like @MFA_China, etc to be on Twitter because it's also illegal for mainland Chinese people to also be on Twitter
This is false. It is not illegal for Chinese citizens to access Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, NYTimes etc etc etc. These American companies have been BANNED from doing business in China, therefore are blocked from the mainlands internet for various reasons.
Some refuse to comply with Chinese law on Data protection, Some refuse to comply with Chinese law on national security or publishing seditious material. For example, Facebook is banned for refusing to remove extremist recruitment materials.
Most western social media companies are banned because China doesn't want private American companies to have access to Chinese people's data - Something which was proved correct by things such as the Cambridge Analytica scandal. These companies such as Twitter, REFUSE to comply
Chinese citizens are FREE TO HOP THE WALL and use western social media as much as they like, and they do! But in doing so they waive their right to protection of the Chinese state if anything was to happen to the data they have given to Facebook, Google etc.
China has successfully protected its citizen's data from American social media giants who as we already know, sell that data to the highest bidder. but this doesnt mean its illegal for a Chinese citizen to USE Twitter. It means its ILLEGAL FOR TWITTER (etc) TO USE CHINESE PEOPLE
Now historically western media outlets have been allowed to operate on the Chinese internet - And some still do. UNTIL THEY START PUBLISHING AMERICAN PROPAGANDA. THEN THEY LOSE ALL RIGHTS TO THIS MARKET.
To do business in a country, one must abide to the laws of that country. If you are not prepared to do that then expect the said country to kick you out. American businesses don't have automatic rights to the population of any given nation to use and abuse.
