As I learned, Champeta as a dance/genre is indeed modern and the adapted version we know now is a mixture of cultures.
The links to colonial settlements and people with a background of slavery is however outstanding.
Have phrased it not clearly enough, sorry!

Sorry @MLouisaE Champeta is a second half 20th century music trend among Colombian communities of black heritage. Seafarers brought then African vinyl records, often of Zairean origin, to Colombia. Records were played on large soundsystems, called pico's at popular parties.

Champeta is not only the tunes, it is the visual culture, the dance (jumping dance moves are not congolese style), picó soundsystems and a whole lot of features that were not brought from Africa. Listen to this, sung in spanish and made in Colombia
