MERE WIFE INK. This word’s used to describe Beowulf, Grendel, Grendel’s Mother & the dragon. For Beowulf, often translated as “hero.” For Grendel’s mother? “Monster” or “hag.” Grrr! It means something more like “formidable.” So much cred to genius artist JOSF at @allwolvesnoheep.

I’ve been saving this arm for YEARS for something proper. I figure the word I want is always going to be a word like this one, which carries a whole story of multiple kinds of characters in its characters.

The font is a combination of the original Beowulf manuscript font and the thorny font used on the cover of The Mere Wife. If you ever need a text tattoo, Josf is the man you need. @allwolvesnoheep is my favorite place, and Josf is my favorite artist.

Is there an accurate and/or modern translation that you recommend, that is absent such malicious mistranslation?

My new translation comes out next year! But the Beowulf For All project is super awesome too.

So beautifully and elegantly fierce! Liz Hand has a review of The Mere Wife coming up in the Sept/Oct issue of F&SF.
