Pixel phones detect songs you hear passively. Great. It keeps a history of all the songs you heard. Awesome. Now, , finish it. Give me a button to make playlists or add these to my music services. It's so close to an absolutely perfect feature.

In terms of possible scenarios that actually matter, I think the biggest risk is that some day we have Huawei and Samsung capable of building their own alternatives to Google...and that's it. Other manufacturers already struggle when they can't reinvent Google's massive wheel.

That's a neat idea, but at this point I think the battle is lost. People can refer to AOSP (less catchy but it works) if they care about the distinction. The bigger deal is the impact on hardware partners. Who have to work with Google, while waiting for the other shoe to drop.

But it is and always has been naive to think that Google lacks an incredibly strong grip over its platform. And relying on Google to be kind and merciful with that grip is no longer a safe bet when we now know that it's not the only one with a say in the matter.

The alternative is to update them at the OS level, which is arguably worse because then they take forever to update. Android updates are broken, perhaps beyond repair. So this solution works for customers.

This is a tough and weird problem because *obviously* Google has control over its proprietary services like Gmail and YouTube. Where it gets weird is when Play Services absorbs more and more of the features you might expect from an operating system and puts them behind a wall.

I like Google. I've been on Android since the gd G1. But "Android" is only an open platform by technicality. Google has a button that can kick people off its platform with serious consequences. It doesn't push it often. But apparently the US government can.

anyone else remember that scene in bioshock infinite where a recording explains why workers are only paid in tokens good at the company store and then you see two workers literally beating each other to death to win an auction for a low-paying job i think about that a lot

It probably won't happen because women already know what it has to say and half the ones I know who have watched it get deeply triggered by it. And some men who need it strongly resist its message. But it's a perfect conversation and it got overlooked and that makes me sad.

A few years later and I'm still digesting Colossal and all I wish in the world was that this movie got the cultural conversation it deserved.
