not to generalize, but ben's followers are very often religious, but by another name. they pray to "logic and reason" as a faith. this piece (and by extension, obvs, 's videos) made a lot of it click for me

my two best guesses are a.) good ol' fashioned misogyny, and 2.) the ex-religious. at least a couple dudes I know grew up in church, left it, but still have rigid subconscious frameworks leftover. the beliefs are the same, even if the set dressing has changed.

from experience in my old church days, I'd guess the complete lack of charisma is a selling point. there's a weird hierarchy where the more you hate sex, drugs, and rock and roll, the cooler you are. i knew dudes who made a performance of looking away from women in bikinis on TV
