It's a great article but this argument seems contradictory. Salomon himself aims to reclaim a diverse, nonsectarian Buddhism as the true, original Buddhism distinct from later historical subtraditions, thus crowning modern scholarship as the sole, authentic keeper of the dharma

Trying to explain the Mahayana intention to a Theravadin is like trying to explain the Catholic Mass to a Protestant. Same religion, yet miles apart. Theravadins don't see the point of compassion. Mahayanists don't see the point without compassion.
