Palindromes are just cool, though: A man, a plan, a canoe, pasta, heros, rajahs, a coloratura, maps, snipe, percale, macaroni, a gag, a banana bag, a tan, a tag, a banana bag again (or a camel), a crepe, pins, Spam, a rut, a Rolo, cash, a jar, sore hats, a peon, a canal—Panama!

It’s important to know about things like “foo” because they’re an important part of computing history and because you’re certain to see them in other contexts. Tutorials that avoid them entirely are doing you a disservice.

The whole point of “foo”, ”bar”, etc., is that they’re used when the specifics don’t matter. But they do tend to be over-used, which is why the Learn Enough tutorials use them only sparingly, preferring more meaningful words whenever possible.
