An unspeakable tragedy occurred yesterday in our capital city. We must come together as a community to heal and stop senseless violence in our schools and neighborhoods. Our hearts go out to the families, students and school staff as they grieve this terrible loss.

As we celebrate here in RI, let’s honor the contributions of the individuals who came together to fight for workplace protections and dedicated their lives to strengthening our middle class—and let’s be grateful for those who continue that work today.

This plan will also siphon funds from essential educational resources like dropout prevention programs and technology improvements. I am entirely opposed to Secretary DeVos’ plan and will work with our state and federal leaders to make sure it never becomes a reality in RI.

This is not a solution. The idea of using federal money to arm teachers is reprehensible. It ignores the reality that improved mental health screening and counseling is 1 of the best ways to prevent school shootings in the long term.

I'm thankful for all who attended our town hall meetings to share their stories & help create a new State Plan on Alzheimer's. Together, we will make this plan a reflection of the real issues facing families, caregivers & those struggling with the disease.
