39.7m+ cards were sent to classification - however, these cards include sensitive information, so used a local machine to process (approx 13.75 days)

Cross-validation presented promising results - failure modes included rotated, sheared or stretched, or skewed images of cards

Template matching approaches were informed by portions Ben segmented in the cards - recurring fields & their location. Small sets of cards had metadata, which helped improve the training set

Next, walks us through supervised learning approaches he applied for classification - 35,000 template images classified by hand to be training data, then assessed & validated, & applied to the full collection

While working through these archives, Ben identified 4 main variants of cards - in template format & file format. Key to note: these death certificates are not comprehensive - still they serve as a record of codified practice
