It is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving that matters.

Kids shouldn’t feel like an empty extension of their parents. Giving kids a sense of control is the only way to teach them competency in decision making, and in whatever skill they’re learning.

You can’t make your kids do something against their will. You can’t make your kids want something they don’t want. You can’t make your kids not want what they want. The best we can do is make it unpleasant enough so that they will comply.

People like people who like them. Instead of seeing judgment in the eyes of others, see need. Most people are not waiting to judge the adequacy of your actions; they are waiting for the chance to share something about themselves.

If you think our choices are purely the results of our free will, then you don’t understand the challenges of our time. Realizing that we all have biases is the only real antidote.

There's the legend of the fish who swam around asking every sea creature he'd meet: “Where is this great ocean I keep hearing about?” We are very much like that fish.

Most of us develop an internal judge in childhood as a way to get along in the world. This judge can begin to wreak havoc on us, leading to suffering as we grow. To transform the judge, we need to understand how it was created. Have compassion for yourself.
