Most of my great public health colleagues are greatly over-estimating the likelihood that the U.S. can mount a national test, trace, and isolate program as have countries like Germany and South Korea. My friends are mistaking a political-cultural challenge for a technical one 1/9

Those individuals are not the central issue. American ambivalence about expanding the role of the state in the health arena began long before they were born, and is far more widely shared.

Good thread, although I don't think it's inherently bad for people to passionately safeguard their privacy and personal autonomy. It's just that in this context, there are some people making really bad decisions for no other reason than white supremacist culture.

Great thread. I'm a little in the middle here. I agree that expecting adherence & success on S. Korea's level is certainly highly naive, but I think semi-success is possible IF this doesn't drag on too long. Time will tell.

Interesting points, Keith. I did see that a 4/24/20 Kaiser poll found that 2/3rds are willing to use contact tracing apps if it allows us to re-open economy. Does contract tracing have to be perfect to be worth doing? Not asking to argue; I just don't know the answer to that.

The uptake rate in Singapore was lower than that so I doubt that 2/3 verbal report translates into 2/3 behavior Don't know how much compliance we need - hope someone else does.
