It's all just one linked list of particles with stretch and bending resistance between consecutive particles. If any pair get too close they swap nexts. The inside/outside distinction for shading only happens after the physics here.

Correct. Here there's just bending and stretching resistance on the boundary, so nothing preserving area (in the earlier animations without reconnections I included pressure so it was-I'm going to try reconnections and pressure together next-just needs a bit of list management).
