talking about worker classification, what about the thinly veiled per-diem model used by many medical institutions. My wife is a medical service provider at an SF hospital, and even with full time hours was not given any form of benefits such as paid maternity leave

here's a company that I think does it right with independent contractors: Taskrabbit. I've worked for Taskrabbit for almost 4 years and they've always let me set my own pay rates and my own schedule (and my own work area).
