And on that day, a day like that, I would invite the Meat over myself. I'd open the office window and howl into the evening. For him. "Let's celebrate your day off, Meat! Let's sign our names all over town together!"

And I guess I do love him. I love what he makes me do to the project, but shit man, just once, JUST ONCE, I'd love to wrap a fuckin story, sit back, and eye that office door, waiting for a knock that never comes, smiling, thinking, "I didn't need you this time, Meat."

He's appeared on days off. On airplanes around the world. He once showed up after fifteen drinks and I said, "You gotta be kiddin me, we're getting serious right NOW?" But I don't joke with him because the Meat doesn't joke. Just shows up. Stays. Until you sign. Until you work.

He's like a secret, this guy. Something even the family doesn't know about! "Josh! How do you DO it? You write so... MUCH!" And I'm smiling, yes, yes, so much, so easy, indeed, while thinking of the Meat in my office, other side of the desk, pointing to the papers... "Sign here."

And I get it. And I made my pact with the Meat a long time ago. I don't love him, he doesn't love me, but he's gonna show up about the time the electricity of the rough draft wanes. Which is entirely unpredictable. Could be night of. Could be four years. This guy.

You invite said friend into the office, you fix two drinks, you pull out the story, and KNOCK KNOCK. The Meat of the Matter is at the door. "Oh, shit," you say, wiping premature whiskey from your face. "This isn't as done as I thought it was." Maybe you shoulda made three drinks.

In that briefcase, the work, is a ton of papers you gotta sign. "Is there joy? Sign here." "Were you clever? Sign here." "Were you you? Sign here." And he comes at the worst time. Like right when you're about to show a friend (or editor!) the story.

No matter how quick you whip through a project (book, song, build a sauna, whatever), at some point the Meat of the Matter shows up. He's ugly, he's tall, and he's got a briefcase full of work that you (YOU) have to do before the project is really, truly done.

I’ll be jumping into Book One of THE FEARING: FIRE & RAIN by 💀 then I’ll write up my review for to say that I’m looking forward to it is a gross understatement. I love that THE FEARING is being released as a serial. Very cool
