Beto is a man of conviction. But he also throws religious freedom under the bus, mobilizes Trump evangelicals, and damages any chance of winning a TX Senate seat should he run. asked a good question. It should be asked of every candidate at the next Dem debate

I'm on the fence about Churches being taxed, but imo it would be all or nothing. Beto's answer is a bad answer. (Also, they wouldn't be taxed on donations, based on current law, so not sure how well taxing churches would even work).

If it happens, it happens. Whatever their views on marriage, Christians can't live in fear. They need to be people of hope. But your point about complexity is important. You can't just dismiss the religious freedom clause of the First Amendment.

They asked Booker the same question tonight and he avoided saying yes or no. He just said that such religious orgs should face consequences.

But facing "consequences" sounds ominous in its ambiguity. At least Beto was forthright and specific.

You are conflating tax exemption with religious freedom. They are not the same thing.

Whole thing was a bad question b/c he lumped churches in w/ colleges. Churches are never going to lose their tax exemption. But private colleges & schools that discriminate on LGBTQ+ status should lose tax exemption just as those like Bob Jones Univ that discriminate on race did.
