New: Five more states take legal action against Purdue Pharma and four name Sackler family members themselves. Targeting the family that controls the company is becoming an increasingly common tactic.

Proud to publish my first story: As a mysterious illness spread through the University of Maryland, officials kept quiet. That decision left vulnerable students, like Olivia Paregol, in the dark.

Important mini-thread here. In reporting on Jordan McNair's death, we also faced exorbitant fees for public records. We paid for some, but the school withheld the most relevant docs. Because of that - even after 2 investigations - we still dont fully understand Maryland's actions

A glimpse into the reporting process on this story: We requested emails that are *public records* from the University of Maryland to try to understand why dozens of college students were sickened. The university cited a $63,646.67 fee to provide emails.

We lost a giant today: Alice Rivlin. Super economist, educator, former Vice Chair of the Fed, Congressional Budget Office founder, Brookings Institution Sr. Fellow, master trekker, phenomenal friend. RIP.

Alice Rivlin was indomitable, brilliant, pragmatic, persistent, a fiercely committed servant of the public interest both in & out of government. An exemplar of the spirit & a mentor, role model and friend to so many here, she is, quite simply, irreplaceable.

A new shiny NASA video promoting the lunar architecture, with narration from William Shatner. If only these programs were as solid as the space agency's production company ;)

$1.6 billion? That's barely the Velcro budget. I'm guessing lunar landers, habitats, rovers, spacesuits, life support not included

I've seen some vague estimates that we need at least $8 billion a year for five years, and then other more optimistic estimates of $3 or $5 billion, but I haven't heard a single suggestion that it can be done for so little

Oh fer cryin’ out loud. That’s nowhere near what’s needed. Also, you can’t buy time. 5 years is just too soon. We should stick to the 2028 timeline and fund it properly.
