Yep. The old "flu or high pollen count" game. I live in Florida now, so I get to play year-round 😂

Don’t compare your first (or second or third) to somebody’s tenth (or twentieth or thirtieth). The craft of writing, like anything worth doing, takes “failure” before success. (In air quotes because what is that, anyway?)

Yep, you will absolutely never please everyone. But you can agonize over it all the way to the bank 😂

My understanding is that a line here and there as a teaser is fine, and sharing with individuals in private for critique is fine, but once you put up large chunks or a whole sample chapter somewhere you run into legal difficulties with future rights to first printing.

My tabs are all real estate development contract structures, because I'm trying to find a way to screw over my MC and crush her dreams. 😅

Nonfiction, but Jenny Lawson's books are so funny that I had to pull off a highway once because I was listening to one and was laughing too hard to see.😂

39, mostly in an early-year search for comps. I've been caught up in querying and my new WIP for the last month, but I just put five books on hold at my library, so I'd better free some reading time soonish :-)

I've got 3 going right now, plus one in revision and querying a fourth. It helps when I'm blocked on one to be able to switch to another to clear my head a bit. BUT, I have considerably more time to write than most.

That it never works out as neatly as it does in books.

Contact them and ask them the level of criticism they're looking for. If they're honestly looking to improve their work, try to sandwich the criticism with what did work. If they've just published and can't change it, focus on a few specific positives.

Not a whole day, but as in, "if I have writing time on Tuesdays/Thursdays, that time will be devoted to querying."

It doesn't matter whether it's cultural. It matters whether it's incompatible. If what he's asking (and can be expected to ask, extrapolated) does it for you or doesn't bother you, cool. If not, and he's not willing to adapt, then it's not sustainable.

As a reader I think the murder mystery itself just has to be satisfying. The clever and compelling can come from the setting and character development. Take a tried and true Agatha Christie plot and stick it in space? Or have it solved by a team of NB teens? I'd read that.
