Not only were the steel and aluminum tariffs harmful to Kansas manufacturers, but the tariffs threatened to pose as a roadblock for the enactment of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

I applaud the administration for reaching an agreement to lift the steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico, and eliminating those countries’ retaliatory tariffs targeted primarily at U.S. agriculture.

While our producers will continue to face higher tariffs when exporting beef to Japan compared to foreign competitors, I am hopeful this lays the groundwork for a bilateral agreement with Japan on agricultural trade. Full statement:

I commend & for negotiating full access for US beef to Japan, a top export market for Kansas cattle. The US produces the safest beef in the world & the elimination of this barrier is a win for trade rules being based on sound science.
