Small note to the movie guy and Toronto Police officer who told me and other pedestrians not to take pictures of a location shoot today: when you’re legally on a public sidewalk, you can take pictures of a public street, no matter how important the movie.

Fleetnet is definitely old and needs updates. The real news story here is the money being spent on encryption, meanwhile there are were no ambulances available earlier tonight in Hamilton. You can buy new radios all you want... Need to have paramedics to use those radios.

Suffice to say, I always appreciate the many paramedics and firefighters who routinely phone or text on their way to a good call! Hopefully that doesn’t violate any rules?

Unnecessary. Hasn’t been a standard up until now, and should not be going forward.

Also, I’m all for encryption of certain PD channels... Not the day-to-day operations, however. As for EMS, more services are moving to computer dispatch anyway. For any FD, encryption is a waste of money and a tactic of secrecy that I’m very verbal about.

To be clear about this new provincial radio system project... Encryption is dangerous to transparency. I’ve seen enough transparency erode with our local police forces (and a handful of fire depts), none of whom do an adequade job informing media/public.
