I remember having to sit down to dinner with my rapist. And when I couldn't take it, when I ran to the bathroom to scream and panic, my mother and aunt came and told me to get over it because - "He's family. You're going to have to forgive him. You'll have to move past this."

Mine came to stay once , I told my mum before he came , she said stay away from him . 😣Two bed , one bath house ! Not possible . I'm sorry Jane , I wish I didn't understand . It's so horribly takes all our trust , safety in one foul swoop . And a lifetime to heal .

I am so sorry your mother did that! I'm so disgusted! Oh, that threw me into a panic just thinking about you... How horrifying. In the same house?! Overnight?! How?!

I find one of the most difficult aspects of this complicity & victimisation is that these are women who we believe in. It shatters an inherent trust, not just in family but in women. I can’t make it better. But gosh....what a brave woman (or girl) you must have been.

I felt like I had to keep going because... What else could I do? I wasn't going to lay down and give up! Years later, I learned of their own abuse. We're all in therapy. We're healing. Things are better. They realize they've done wrong, and they're working on it.

My mom moved my relative/molester in with us a few years after learning of my years-long molestation because, oddly enough, his little sisters were no longer comfortable with him at their home. I will never, ever forgive her for it. Thankfully, he's dead now.

And, I'm sorry for appearing self-absorbed, your tweet triggered a response in me. I'm so sorry this happened to you, it's terrible when those whose sole job is to protect us fail to do so

I walked out of a gathering when my brother — who tried to kill me when I was a teen — walked in. The family who assured me he wasn’t going to be there tried to shame me into staying.

That is horrifying. Why are we shamed? Why aren't they?!

Nope. You don’t have to do any of that.

Don't worry! I didn't! And I won't. And I don't know that I ever will. But... I've forgiven them. And I'm educating them. And they're learning.
