Delighted that Supreme Court has just given OK to reintroducing cheetah from Namibia. This was something I had initiated 10 years ago. Cheetah which derives from the Sanskrit 'chitra' (speckled) is the only mammal hunted to extinction in modern India.

Sharing a 2011 news report on the steps taken to reintroduce Cheetah back then. I urge the government of the day to move ahead with implementation atleast now.

I am delighted too but mystified as to why the issue had to await judicial clearance. The reintroduction of the cheetah was not a legal issue but centred on wildlife enrichment. The tendency to approach the courts for everything should be decried.

Was the Cheetah ever found in the wild in India? If so then in which area?
Kalyan Sunkara 1月28日
It was until late 1940’s . Mostly near Madhya Pradesh. In the past they were used like hounds to hunt down antelopes by maharajas and nawabs. Last known cheetah was hunted by some maharaja belonging to Madhya Pradesh. Now Asiatic cheetah is only found in Iran.

If the re-introduction is handled the way the lion reintro was done, then I'm afraid it's going to go the same way! There are still many expansive savanna grasslands left in India. The trick is to think outside the PA box. But unfortunately, sarkaari conservationists cannot!

African cheetah is an exotic species. So introduction of an exotic african cheetah in Indian landscape has no conservation value. Ofcourse some income from tourism. However, shall we give priority to such gimmicks and not focus on conservation?
