Mr. Buss is a institution. He even got to teach the children of some of my classmates. What a legacy.

In a world that tried to tell us we had to act a certain way because we were “exceptional”, there was a lot of power in just letting us be who we were. In all of our middle school awkwardness.

He made space for us to just hang out after school. I have vivid memories of being on the middle school yearbook staff solely because he was the sponsor.

He would take us to the state meetings for Junior Classical League and never once did he lecture us on any kind of respectability type behavior, even though we were usually the only Black kids there.

He taught classes full of gifted Black and Brown kids and let them just be. And we were damn good at Latin too.

Stop begging for people to love you. Stop asking for a seat at their table. Quit giving people the benefit of the doubt. Believe folks when they show you who they are and where they stand.

Politics aren't personal, they're not solitary ideas that live on islands that we can keep to ourselves. The politics we enact have real life consequences for us and others.

One of the most insidious things that white supremacy has done is to have us internalize ideas that are harmful to us.
