Not to be the voice of doom or anything, but with KidLit, if the books aren’t here or coming soon, we’ve already lost a whole group of kids who will never see that work. If this is something we care about, we have to change and we have got to move fast and with urgency.

Guys, this is a great opportunity. I participated (not for kid lit) with in May and it was a PHENOMENAL experience. Do it. You won't regret it.

We’ll do this every year and we’ll get bigger too. This year, we’re just trying to stay afloat and alive (so if you’re a potential sponsor or an individual who would love to give, please go to our website and make a donation) . 6/

We’re looking fornunderrepresented voices. We’re looking for the stories you love from US markets but haven’t seen here. We’re looking for funny and scared and weird from writers who’ve always wanted to see themselves in books but never did. Please send in your work. 5/

It’s a last minute effort for a pilot year where we are already strained financially, but we can’t just do nothing, so we are accepting applications for folks who are looking for that gateway in - to break through with KidLit and middle grade. 4/

It’s difficult to explain here. But the focus is so narrow. And the urgency is so real. We found no recent disabled kid Lit authors and so few men of colour who were traditionally published and limite intersectionality. I have so much to say but I can’t organize my thoughts. 3/

There is lovely and important work around diversity in kid Lit that’s taking place in a general sense in many publishing houses. There are more writers of colour than before. But there are very limited options in the area of Canadian kid Lit on so many fronts.

While we are thrilled with the authors who will be joining us this September, who we will be announcing soon, we were disheartened by significant gaps in representation in picture books & middle grade novels. This is part of the FOLD’s efforts to shift the industry. 1/

I argued w/ a white male “family friend” until I cried two years ago, trying to convince him that Trump was racist. Today I find myself wondering/hoping/praying that what I said is revisiting him now, that he’s seeing the proverbial light of day. But it’s unlikely.

Hopefully, we’ll be on the same team, Danny. Because, well, I can be competitive. And, well, it’s sad. It’s really sad. And our friendship, well, it just began. 😰
