After >2 years of effort by our team in 7 labs, we present to you: 3 million choices from 101 mice in a standardized decision-making task. 🐭

Mice 🐭 are excellent decision-makers, and can learn to perform complicated tasks. So far, such behavior often relied on custom-built setups, and required the 'artist's hands' of experienced mouse whisperers. 2/10 pic.twitter.com/3szADKLeK6

However, to study the neural basis of decision-making, we need reliable paradigms for mouse behavior!
Our team established standardized methods to ensure the #reproducibility of mouse behavior across different labs. 3/10

After teaching 101 mice the same behavioral task, we asked if their behavior was really reproducible across labs.
A trained classifier was not able to tell which lab each mouse came from. We've never been so happy to see a classifier fail! 4/10 pic.twitter.com/rjGNi4xgK4

We also trained mice on a variant of the task, where they integrate priors into their decision strategy. Across different labs, mice use this information in a similar way. 5/10 pic.twitter.com/Ghy1ITnx79

In the process, we developed a ton of resources that we'd love the community to use.

With @SanworksLLC, we've designed easy-to-build rigs that you can put together from off-the-shelf, open-source parts and some 3D printed components. At #SfN19, we built it in 1 day!

We’ve also figured out how to work together in large, distributed groups. Our team is in 22 labs, across 15 research institutes - with 9 hours time difference 🕑 #teamscience 8/10 pic.twitter.com/pPNEpP10KG

Of course, the code github.com/int-brain-lab/… and data data.internationalbrainlab.org are all open. Huge thanks to @DataJointNeuro for the beautiful interactive visualizations. 9/10 pic.twitter.com/vBLorf3uLB

We're now using these methods and infrastructure to record brain activity while mice perform this decision-making task. Watch this space for spikes! 🧠⚡️ 10/10
