Different connotations and frames they invoke. "Kind" is usually associated with fundamental values a person has/lives out whether "nice" with just behaviour/demeanor. Compare "He paid off my student loans he's so nice!" vs "He paid off my student loans. He's so kind!"

Being nice=treating someone as they want to be treated. Being kind=treating someone with regard to their good.
