Let's look at the kind of person I was in middle school and high school. 1) I was intersex. 2) I was neurodivergent. 3) I was visibly gender non-conforming. 4) I was hella queer and trans, though I didn't know that yet. 5) I lived at the ass end of Fundietown, USA.

All of those things put together led to me being targeted for not being feminine in the right way. By my peers, by my family, by my church, by everyone. People finding me attractive was a joke at my school. And no one was more cruel to me than the girls my age.

They'd do things like set me up on "blind dates" at lunchtime with boys who looked like they wanted to run for the hills as soon as they saw me. Pretend to be interested in what I was talking about and then humiliate me mercilessly for it. Make -->

plans and invite me along, then no one would show up and I was the only one there. One time one of them told me that my drama class was meeting in the auditorium instead of our usual classroom. I got detention for being late for class.

The point of all of this is that I spent my adolescence having the toxicity of every other girl my age that I knew laser-focused on me like a fucking Death Star ray. I never, ever ONCE made the choice to say "I'm not like other girls" until other girls said "You're not like us."

But one day I made the decision to stop trying to impress people who hated me, and I said "You know what? You're fucking right I'm not like you." The "other girls" in my life weren't a happy, supportive sisterhood that I spurned Because Misogyny.

They were a vile, vicious clique who looked at a vulnerable, friendless person and saw a target.

So, yeah, forgive me if I'm a little skeptical of the idea that every girl/AFAB person (because a great deal of kids who have a "not like other girls" phase are just uncracked eggs) who makes memes about being different from their peers is secretly a raging misogynist.

Most of us are people who are coping with social ostracism by turning it into a point of pride rather than a point of shame.

This is getting a lot of attention. I write stuff on the internet, mostly about demon-aliens recovering from horrific interpersonal abuse. I also make music sometimes. Project thread: Patreon:
