Despite their similarities, the words RAGE and OUTRAGE are entirely unrelated. RAGE derives via French from the Latin โ€˜rabareโ€™, meaning โ€˜to rave madlyโ€™, while OUTRAGE is a French corruption of โ€˜ultraโ€™, the Latin for โ€˜beyondโ€™ or โ€˜excessiveโ€™.

Yes of course! Earliest record is Francis Grose's Provincial Glossary (1787, ), but it's also in the English Dialect Dictionary (Vol. 2, 1900) as well as a few others.
