I think if you observe open source commits before and after hackmcgill was created, there's been a large increase at McGill.

which is why we have weekly hack nights were Mcgill hackers get together to work. Hackathons provide extra:food,mentors,people,etc

hackathons provide incentive for people to try out new ideas without much risk. And it's not like your fighting hackers to survive.

competition is not orthogonal to collaboration. It can encourage people to form groups and use their comparative advantages.
