A great piece showing how industry cut gas consumption by some 20 percent without much cuts in value added and how households adapted and saved energy. Capitalism is great in adjusting economy when prices signal need for change.

But the German government gas measures actually undercut the price mechanism you describe, or am I wrong? Would it not have been a lot more effective if we subsidized only the truly needy, and only those companies that would otherwise really not survive?

Some measures did. The Gaspreiskommission's recommendations would keep the price signal working. However, the government now seems to deviate from the proposals and again try to manipulate the price. That will again reduce the price signal.

Yes, based on prices. Which is different from what is best for the environment.

We would be even quicker if we had leadership and joint European action in the EU and ideology replaced by pragmatism in Berlin.

All it took was the imminent threat of nuclear conflict to get western Europe to divulge from Russian gas. Pretty dynamic!
