Experts in China say wear your mask. Journalists in the US say no need and it might make it worse.

It wouldn't make it worse, but it could just not be enough, as well, China is giving information on the virus very slowly.

Standard cloth face masks are a net risk - You breath out, moistening the cloth, then exterior contaminants breed on the damp surface
A proper filtered respirator has a shuttle valve so the intake closes it pushing air through the filter, or is pushed open by exhaling directly

The damp cloth breeds the virus and your exhalation spreads it - They are part of why China has such a track record with respiratory viruses
The Filtered respirator needs changing daily and hazmat disposing - assuming it was a fine enough filter to catch viral particulate

It all depends...id want to see the science on if the virus is small enough to pass through a mask. Generic white masks will not filter every virus.
