This is a very odd and disturbing story, whatever you make of the people who have been affected. We seem to have unwittingly imported a variant of the Chinese "social credit" system; one intermediated by large companies

OK I'll try one more. State of Wonder by Ann Patchett. A female drug company executive goes up the Amazon in search of a mysterious research scientist gone rogue. Unputdownable (shades of Heart of Darkness but with humour)

Try Sybille Bedford's "A Legacy". More distracting than cheery although elegant wit & lovely tone. Two families intermarry in pre-WW1 Germany with disastrous consequences. Basically autobiographical. A masterpiece

I was obsessed with this film as a kid, and can still pretty much recite the whole script. And now I learn that it was released exactly 50 years ago today.

I thought the water rate was set by the independent regulator and not the Scottish govt? Are you saying this is no longer the case?

It's odd that on a question of such importance, Massie doesn't seem to have a view one way or another, other than simply weighing the bookies odds on the possible outcome (something he does repeatedly).

An abandoned potato sorting station near Krasnosilka, Ukraine with a unusual, cantilevered design. The concrete block at the end forms the counterweight of the structure, creating the impression it floats over the fields.

I already spend a fortune on Sky TV. If it’s failed to identify this colossal paragon I might as well give up.
