I think one major shift would help: People have babies bc we want to see the continuation of the human species. It just so happens that only some of us have uteruses. Using a uterus doesn’t signal lack of commitment to a job. I think it would be good if ppl could agree on that.

With the rise in the number of medical schools in my country, access to postgraduate training is becoming less of a problem. Costs is still a problem as well as social issues such as work-life balance and perceptions that surgery is demanding compared to other specialities

Surgical careers are often viewed as more demanding both financially and socially especially with regards to having a family as some Surgical training programs are not as supportive of this.

a lot of (male) bosses presumed women were less serious about career/ambitions because presumably were going to eventually have children & take leave. This reduced # of women they selected for leadership. Encouraging both parents to take leave levels this! 2/2

Leave policies are necessary! However further training & cultural shift also needed to ensure institutions don’t see maternal leave as a reason to limit women from leadership. has had 1 yr maternal leave since I was a kid —> without the cultural change it led to 1/?

As a first-gen med student + woman from a LIC, cost & longer timeline is a huge barrier! Families are more likely to invest money in male children than female children. Even my family who are very supportive - are concerned about longer training & what that means for having kids
