Patients are not "customers." The word "patient" denotes their highly vulnerable position, and they need people totally dedicated to them.

Yup. Same way doctors aren't "employees" or "service providers." We work way below out real pay grade. We are here because we want to be here to help people.

Old French “pacient”, Latin “patientem”; suffering or sick person under medical treatment. Anglo-French “custumer”/Medieval Latin “custumarius”; a toll-gatherer, tax collector. Etymology matters. Not knowing what has happened before us is like being incessant children. - Cicero

I’ve never supported the pt. = customer. This a particularly salient point now that many people have no choice in there healthcare.. the clinician pt. Relationship is sacred not a thing of revenue.

Agreed! @GavinPrestonMD
The word “patient” connotes vulnerability, which is central to the patient-physician relationship
The move to “customer service” came when the system failed to serve our patients well
Service, too, is a powerful word..
How about “Patient Service”?

Patient is a good word. Vastly misunderstood, misrepresented. I find ‘consumer’ as a patient insulting. I’m not consuming healthcare. I find Service Provider equally humiliating as a doctor, I serve, I am the patients ‘servant’ but definitely not a provider for corporate, thanks.
