I agree about the actual relevance of out of office replies. The underlying problem which makes them useless is that people expect everybody to reply to requests almost immediately. Probably, we just have to assume that most messages are not urgent, as you note.

You raise a very important point here, about not checking emails. Yet, I feel (and again it's probably my problem) that most emails one receives (even scam invitations😂) expect an almost immediate reply.
