This is staggering and means that the prospects of a negotiated deal with the EU have greatly receded. Just when you think Brexit can't get any madder...

Whatever those amendment are, they are not “consistent” with the Chequers plan. That isn’t a matter of interpretation it is simply a fact. So last week’s offer to is null & void; Customs Bill amendments accepted by government - BBC News

Every day, their true agenda for leaving the EU—concealed in populist anti-immigrant ‘take back control’ rabble-rousing—becomes ever more transparent. The same ideologues who preach about the people ‘getting what they voted for’. Their profit.

1/ Just caught up with Welsh first minister Carwyn Jones on his way out of a meeting with Michel Barnier. Snap reflection: ‘I think the UK and the EU are a long way from an agreement. Time’s running out.’

This is utterly extraordinary...as a political tactic it could backfire as Conservative remainers will push their own CU amendment. As a negotiation tactic it will fail as it removes negotiation space& increases the chances of a no deal cliff-edge

So who won? Donald Trump, Theresa May, the Blimp, the Royals or the demonstrators? Actually, none of the above. The person to emerge with most dignity from last week’s unwanted tour by the American president was the woman he “totally hates.”

BBC News - Brexiteers' Customs Bill amendments accepted by government It was unlikely that the EU27 were going to accept much of the White Paper anyway. Now the European Research Group is going to make it impossible

The official government position is the ERG amendments are consistent with Chequers plan, “no impact” on it. Slightly odd for ministers to make a thing of that, because it will only reinforce the determination of ERG to make sure the parrot is in fact dead

This is the end of any possibility of this government negotiating a deal to leave the EU. Only possibilities now are no deal (most likely IMO), another vote or another administration. There's no way the EU can negotiate w/May now. Dark clouds circling over Ulster now.

Source says government imposed one condition in agreeing amendments to Customs bill made by ERG and , which in effect kills Chequers plan - "that no one from the ERG crowed about it and that there was no triumphalism". It is all about the substance you see
