I'd like to think I'd have been intrigued by the Princess of Mars homage in Leia's outfit, but I was 4 years old in 1983, so my actual takeaways would have been: PRETTY COLORS MAGIC SPACE SWORD. That's not a hypothetical. Those are my first memories associated with this movie.

I'd probably have assumed they redesigned Chewbacca. It wouldn't have been obvious the character was in scale relative to Leia and Lando, so... sure. New mask for the alien character, or maybe this is one of his relatives.

At some point, when this is over, evidence about this administration's crimes is going to be public and undeniable. A lot of people are then going to claim they're SHOCKED and there was no way to know. Just putting a time stamp on this: WE KNEW. It was obvious the whole time.

It's also worth acknowledging that all of this is based on very little data: there haven't been a lot of "test cases" at this scale, and the ones that exist tend to have fairly unique circumstances.

Good rule of thumb is if the first installment is MASSIVE, the second part will be strong but nowhere near as huge, and part 3 will (probably) fall somewhere in the middle. If part 1 does fine but not great, there's an opportunity for growth (certainly not guaranteed, though).

To date, that's been true of Star Wars, because the first installments have always been massive events. It's less clear when the box office for the 1st part is more muted (Batman Begins, The Matrix, etc.)...

It's surreal reading articles like this now that I have a baby. Like, AN ENTIRE EPISODE OF A SHOW IN ONE WEEK? Where would you find the time?

Yeah, you don't get 1st installments anywhere near TFA levels and expect to match or exceed it. Not just Star Wars - that's pretty much a given throughout the industry.

Correction: the two movies are closer critically than I thought. I should have said it MATCHED TFA, not surpassed. My bad.

Critically, The Last Jedi surpassed Force Awakens, at least by most metrics. But there was no way to sell it as an event on the same scale, and it's absurd to claim otherwise.

The Force Awakens wasn't just an event, it was one of the biggest events in movie history - a return to form for arguably cinema's most beloved franchise after the prequels.

Yeah, that's not how this works. The factors that drove Force Awakens to the ALL TIME #1 US spot were numerous and complex. I won't say nothing will ever duplicate them, but it'll probably take a while. And there was no way the middle chapter was going to pull that off.

I haven't seen the movie in a few decades, but that sounds right. I'm still really enjoying the show, but it's appealing to the part of me that likes pretty pictures rather than the part that writes.

Disagree. I really like M&Ms, and while the fun size bags usually don't contain more than 2 or 3 pieces, they remind me how satisfying a handful would be. Each fun size bag contains a dream. Not much more than a dream, but... Damn it. You're right. Milky Ways aren't that bad.

You know how things mock fantasy by pretending it's just a chain of random mcguffins and new powers/creatures thrown at the audience every 5 minutes? Well... That's a pretty accurate synopsis so far. But damn is it pretty.

I'm 4 episodes into Dark Crystal, and it's breathtaking and incredible, but... The ratio of lore to substance feels closer to parodies mocking fantasy than to most actual fantasy I've come across.

How dare you, sir? HOW DARE YOU? *cries inconsolably for three hours while shoveling plain M&M's into mouth*

I feel bad that everyone's ganging up on Milky Way, but it's objectively the worst candy up there.

I think it's fair to infer they meant theatrical based on the movie choices, and Phantasm should definitely count. If it were a list of the best Batman movies without other qualifiers, I'd want see RotJ included, no question, along with Apocalypse, Red Hood, and a few others.
