I wish more leaders realize this! At RIKEN they teach us to “lead by following” our group. I absolutely love the idea but how many of us really do that? 😔

Agree! EM is usefully to learn so many other things: latent variable models, generative models, partition functions, posterior distribution, clustering, difficult maximum likelihood problems. I cover it in a semester course but not in the introductory one

Yes I like this idea of “forewarnings”. I wouldn’t do it to all but sometimes I can afford. The mistreatment that I am referring to are usually harassment when visa office people say mean things and be unreasonable even when they don’t need to.....

Let me highlight this amazing work I've read recently on in NLP, in which you'll find both: - a deep discussion of what it means for a neural model to be compositional - a deep and insightful comparison of LSTM, ConvNet & Transformers! 👉

Question: is it ok to cancel your invited talk if the visa office mistreats you? I have been endured a lot in past. It felt unfair to cancel due to people who have invited me, but this is becoming too much to take lately. Your thoughts are appreciated! 🙏🏾
