Yes, and not just teachers! Other professionals, like school librarians can also provide very useful PD for teachers and vice versa...

The both are needed but a schools library is essential. A shared curated resource across the whole school gives children accesss to a greater selection of books and reduces the pressure on teachers budgets. It’s not the amount in the classroom that counts it’s the quality.

We try to but not in all our schools. I think you are right that generally speaking they do eventually make their way back. Maybe just reduce the number of times that you do it. Once a term as a reminder to any really overdue?

We are currently looking at how we support the book awards we follow. If we can still run them but get the teachers to present the books we can do an introduction and end session. This will give us time to focus on the research based lessons.

Having only done it once, I found it really challenging! Was really grateful for the support via SLS. Helping teachers understand what we do is the only way forward. There is never enough time in the teacher training days to include the school librarian. Talking is the only way.

I love the teaching and working with teachers and students too. Cataloguing and inputting is on my list of jobs that I have to do but find so tiresome... but that beats report writing any day :)

2/2 Biggest take away is that librarians need to get away from the admin and into the classrooms and teach more but mostly this impossible if there is only one person working in the library.

Basically she was saying that her role in the classroom teaching research skills is just as important as being in the library encouraging reading. She talks about helping and making a difference in a science class. 1,2

The best way to introduce social democracy is to re-instate the ring fencing of the budget for school libraries, with a librarian and make a school library blossom in EVERT school.
