But we couldn’t find any evidence of anyone being prosecuted for sending a rude novelty postcard in the USA — but we DID find a rich, decades-long history of smutty souvenir postcards.

At least in the United States, prosecution for sending rude mail requires the recipient to make a complaint. This applies whether or not it was a postcard — technically you’re not supposed to write “go fuck yourself” in a letter and mail it.
