How come Iran's actions...like holding hostage an academic, using proxies to attack in Iraq, attacking Saudi Arabia with drones, mining ships, planting IEDs in the Golan...are never "outrageous" and undermine diplomacy? They literally had militias in Iraq fire rockets w impunity

1/ No, the Fakhrizadeh killing is not a violation of international law. The reasoning of the US Military Academy's law department (in the Soleimani case) explains why. Iran & Israel are engaged in an international armed conflict.

Tasnim keeps adding to Mohsen Fakhrizadeh's photo gallery. He's pictured in two of the photos with 's defense minister Amir Hatami. Amazing how overnight we went from having only a few photos of him to what will likely be dozens over the next weeks and months.

A truck bomb, then a hail of bullets: Tasnim said the attack took place at 2:30 p.m., local time, and that Fakhrizadeh’s relatives were with him at the time of the attack, but it wasn’t clear if his family members were in the same vehicle.

The bottom line: this attack made Iran look weak. Iran is unlikely to entertain talks in such a position. Iran will want to reestablish the upper hand. That requires risking escalation: either thru revenge attacks, an assertive military posture, or advances in its nuclear program

All those who had access to the Iranian nuclear archive can testify to his personal importance. All those who claim that "one scientist does not matter" fundamentally misunderstand the importance of leadership in major government projects

This person shouldn’t have been at the centre of a nuclear program of which we all know the end goal of (whether or not a nuclear deal happens to pause it for some years): the aspiration & ultimately the ability to build an atomic weapon & in its use, another Holocaust.

Then again it would be strange. Unless they’re there to track any launch characteristics and update Arrow-2/3 to interceptions. Normally they’re over Israel during launches however.

Wonder if they’re basing near Yemen incase Unit 9900 &/or Unit 8200 get intel of launch preparations from Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen. They claim to have the range to reach Israel and have threatened it in the past.

NYT: "...some American officials argued that the death of Mr. Fakhrizadeh...amplifies the chilling message to the country’s other top scientists working on that program: If the well-guarded head cannot be protected, neither can anyone else."
