There has been an unprecedented effort to stop the Croatian public from reading this story. Please pass this around as much as you can. It’s because it involves both sides of the political elite cozying up to Russian money.

Libel Lawsuits are like car accidents— everyone including us loses. But we have never lost a case in almost a dozen suits across a decade. Many dozens more were threatened but never filed. The key is bulletproofing your stories -editing and fact checking. Thread 1/5.

Suits are not going away. Our worry is that many smaller organizations struggle to survive against their onslaught. Join us in pushing for new anti-SLAPP laws to help media against harassment suits. And help us to further reform the UKs dangerous and antiquated libel laws. 5/5

Harassing lawsuits will not defeat us. We have adequate strategic reserves, a host of strong pro bono attorneys, quality media insurance and many deep-pocketed friends. We will always survive. Plus we’re strengthening ourselves by building a new self insurance fund. Thread 4/5

If we make a mistake we will apologize and correct. To us this is business, not personal. But those who harass us for no just cause will soon learn that they will always be on our radar. Again, it’s business not personal - aggression is a defense bullies understand. Thread 3/5.

Those opposing us have lost a lot more —many millions of dollars in fees — but never have we had to take a story down, apologize or pay a judgment. When it’s over, we’re not afraid to keep reporting on them. It’s a rough world but you must trust your standards. Thread 2/5.

Croatian media were 'encouraged' to ignore this story by a PR firm. Not a single media ran this. Too bad. It's very important. Please pass this on to anyone you know in Croatia. They have a right to know. Don't be controlled.

This is the tip of the iceberg of the Russian government's influence among Croatia's leading business and political elite. Nobody wants this to run. Pass this on to one Croatian citizen and you will have done your duty.
