Given the suggestive pose, many have believed that Marie was Beaucourt’s mistress. This was quite common with white slavers, but the term ‘mistress’ must be resisted. Enslaved women were sexually abused. They were not mistresses.

George Floyd is representative of why we have a . He was a former service/"essential" worker. His job had been cut. He had in April. He had asthma that comes from ecological devastation & the militarized police killed him. It's all part of his story.

I do not believe that training will change an ofcr who fundamentally does not believe in the humanity of Black ppl. This is why I’m saying we need accountability for current ofrcrs & a reimagined plan for public safety that reduces the need for police presence.

🙏, ! As a Marine vet, Fletcher understands that this is a totally inappropriate use of the Nat'l Guard, wasting resources, intimidating peaceful protesters, & putting Guard members in an awk position! So important to amplify his asking to send Guard home!

In SDPD's own words, they did this because "A detective witnessed a woman step off of the sidewalk into the roadway and swing a cardboard sign at a passing SDPD motorcycle officer." (Via ) A cardboard sign. Stepped off the sidewalk.

Perhaps I'll even watch tonight, Sonya. It's been hard to focus on anything more than the news and reports here. But I've been wanting to see it since before the shutdown!

Your article said there were 50 people, which is maybe because you came at noon when most people had gone home? . At 9 am, there were several hundred, who had marched from CVRC to corner and lined both sides, as you can see on videos .

Merci, Lunionsuite! I'm also writing about the importance of supporting Haitian filmmakers in being able to make films about Hn. hist. instead of waiting for Hollywood to do it. Right now this intvw is only in French but I'll talk more in my book in Eng.

The difference between a police union and a real union is that when a steelworker shoves a 75-year-old man to the concrete and cracks his skull, the steelworker goes to jail.

Yup, I saw the date. Stunning that she would double down in the face of so much protest - and NOW when there are so many other things in the world to need to talk about.

I also love assigning Evelyne Trouillot's The Infamous Rosalie, which imagines what an enslaved woman's narrative from the 18th C. would look like (we don't have one from the Antilles). Brilliant and students love it.

Carolyn Fick, Making of Haiti, pp. 15 -75 (off the top of my head :)). 15-45 on slave society; 46 - 75 on resistance! Always works beautifully, though the resistance section is ROUGH - but students learn a lot.
