Growing up I didn’t have a lot of role models that looked like me. We need more mentors that walk and talk like our students.

California has done a great job at making higher education more affordable. But we need to do more for our students. We need to tackle homelessness, food insecurity and transit issues. As a college student, I encountered these issues all too well.

We have to build a system of education for the 21st century to be able to fuel the economy of the future. Our higher education needs to reflect the diversity of the state.

I was a teen parent, with little direction, but I knew I needed to make something of myself for my daughter. I worked through school and did three years of community college and three years of CSU Fullerton. It wasn’t easy and other students shouldn’t have these burdens.

My message to raisin producer Sun-Maid: Treat your workers right. You’re making millions off their backs. Now I ask the public — join Local 431 as they fight for better treatment. They grow our food and contribute to our economy. Let’s support them.
