Can you play tic tac toe against a computer when there is no computer, just logic gates and a ROM? Apparently so:

Backstory: Trying to build player vs. board TTT with TTL. 4 bits of ROM output is next move. 4 bits is next state num. State num + 9 bits of user move to look up next board move.

I've ended up doing it recursively. I get an answer. Now I need to check that it's valid :-)

Twitteratis, I need an algorithm. I have a sparse 2D array, 201 rows, 113 cols, 463 elements. I want to label each element with a 4-bit id such that: all ids in a column are constant, all ids on a row are unique. And, maybe, to tell if this is not possible. Ideas or pointers? Thx

Instructions to build the CPU are here: I have a few spare PCBs if someone else wants to try.

I decided to mute my landline ringtone as the only calls I get on it are scammers. Haven't made an outbound landline call in months. Pity it's bundled with my cable Internet connection.

I missed learning the "etch your own PCB" skills in the 80s. Now with , freeroute and other FOSS tools, plus cheap PCB fabs, I can design and build this: Thanks, FOSS people!

This is wrong in so many ways. The actual memorandum containing K. Thompson'sUser's Reference for the B Programming Language (the precursor of C) is openly available at
