Apparently the US has bombed a base in Syria, and can one of my actual smart military friends tell me how to feel about this?

Because Assad sucks but I think this is bad, but apparently it makes Russia mad and frankly I'm not a big fan of Russia right now and...

...look, I literally have NO IDEA at this point. I am good at gardening. You want to know what to plant in Syria, I'll find out for you.

But the Syrian war got past my ability to even fake that I knew what was going on years ago, so can somebody I trust sum up in small words?

I have been relying on to explain it to me, he's pretty good actually.

Basically Assad (bad) is fighting the "rebels" who at this point are mostly Al Qaida (also bad), and also ISIS (very bad).

The Kurds (maaaaaybe okay) are fighting ISIS (with our help) and sometimes Assad (without our help).

Meanwhile the Turks (also pretty bad at this point) are KIND of fighting ISIS, but really hate the Kurds and want to fight them.

The Russians essentially own Assad, so they've been helping him fight the rebels while we help people fight ISIS and try not to meet up.

Now, today, Trump decided to throw a bunch of cruise missiles at one of Assad's bases. Which a) angers Russia and b) doesn't help anyone.

To complicate things, the Kurds in Iraq (corrupt oligarchy) are semi-friendly with Turkey and don't like the Kurds in Syria (communists).

If you were a liberal gardener from the States who wanted the fewest civilian casualties, who would you root for?

There's not a lot of good outcomes here. Helping the Kurds is fine but they're not going to take over the country.

Generally, while I hate to say root for Assad, he's probably better than ISIS or anarchy?

I'd root for the Kurds on the understanding that they are not angels. They do jail political opponents and set IEDs for soldiers in Turkey.

People here desperately want to make the rebels the heroes, but they're not. They're mostly super militant islamists.
