We chose to organize our society in a way where it’s okay to profit off people dying of cancer. Really? That’s the best the human spirit of ingenuity can come up with? Pitiful.

Over a belt ... an untucked shirt ... that is going to be my line in the sand? the reason I get frustrated ... the reason I lose class time ... the reason a kid goes from a dress code violater to insubordinate and removed from class. I don’t think so. They can write me up.

Will you get rid of NCLB/Race to the Top mandates ... and any other thing that require states to mandate testing? Will you empower teachers to teach rather than test makers to profit off testing?

I get the whole follow the rules ... how much time is too much time to lose over this. Kid comes in with no belt ... I have to mark their card and get them a replacement belt ... then I have to mark the online version of the card. 2-3 minutes ... 6% of class time over a belt

But the rule says ... wear a belt unless there are no belt loops. On the other hand ... so you would kick a kid out of class for not having a belt on? How long would you debate this issue? How much class/learning time is acceptable to lose over a belt?

It also puts the teacher in the middle ... the one policing uniforms ... having the debates with the kids because we are the ones being tasked with enforcing the rules... while we build those positive relationships. Knowing when to relax is a convo that needs to happen.

The kids who intentionally buy pants with no belt loops so they don’t have to wear a belt impress me.

As a student, I struggle(d) with homework ... showing my work ... maybe that is why as a teacher I do not do the homework thing.

I am fortunate that have two bathrooms in my classroom area ... kids don't have to ask nor sign in/out ... the only "rule" is too keep it clean and to let me know if there are problems ie backed up toilet. Go when you need to.

It is strange what educators can get hung up on ... the rule says a “black or brown belt” ... the replacement belts handed out are red ... some kids cut the belt loops off because no belt loops means they don’t have to wear a belt

Things that we should not have to debate ... whether or not the white piping on a black jacket makes the black jacket no longer "black" ... are we really going to choose to make the white piping on a kid's jacket a discipline issue? ... a reason to send the kid out of class?
